FERROCARRIL AUSTRAL FUEGUINO (FCAF), Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

FERROCARRIL AUSTRAL FUEGUINO (FCAF)
(Tren del Fin del Mundo / Train of the End of the World)

Ushuaia.

The Train of the End of the World is a 500 mm gauge steam railway in Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina. It was originally built as a freight line to serve the prison of Ushuaia, specifically to transport timber. It now operates as a heritage railway into the Tierra del Fuego National Park and is considered the southernmost functioning railway in the world. The line was open in 1909. In 1949 an earthquake blocked much of the line. Nevertheless, the government made efforts to clear the line and put the train back in service, but the service was not viable and closed in 1952. In 1994, the railway was rebuilt and began services again as touristic train.

M/S SATRÚSTEGUI
Compañía Transatlántica Española

Advertising postcard published by the Compañía Transatlántica Española.

On December 14, 1946, the ship Explorador Iradier, commissioned by the Compañía Transmediterránea, was launched at the Elcano shipyard in Valencia. The ship made its first test trip to Palma de Mallorca on September 13, 1948, and in August 1952 it was acquired by the Compañía Transatlántica Española and renamed Satrústegui. She went on to cover the line between the Spanish ports in the Mediterranean and Venezuela, Central America and the Antilles, with calls at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In 1973, due to the loss results due to competition from the plane, the ship, with the new name Isla de Cabrera, was moored in the port of Barcelona, where on June 30 of the same year it suffered a serious fire, and on September 26, given the impossibility of repairing it, it was decided to scrap it, which was carried out in Castellón, where it had been towed.

M/S "MONTEREY", MSC - Mediterranean Shipping Cruises. Postcard

M/S MONTEREY
MSC - Mediterranean Shipping Cruises

Advertising postcard.

The Monterey was built by Bethlehem Steel of Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1952 as the Free State Mariner "Mariner"-class cargo ship and completely rebuilt at Willamette Steel in Portland, Oregon, in 1956 as the 365-passenger luxury liner for the Matson Line service in the South Seas. After successive sales, in 1994 she passed into the hands of the Italian shipping company Flotta Lauro, which became Mediterranean Shipping Cruises. In 2006, renamed Monte, she was transferred to Alang (India) for scrapping.

MSC was founded in Naples in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte and began operations with two ships, which covered an operational merchant line between the Mediterranean and Somalia. The company expanded through the acquisition of second-hand cargo ships. By 1977, the company was operating in northern Europe, Africa, and the Indian Ocean. Business expansion continued through the 1980s; by the end of the decade, MSC was operating shipping lines to North America and Australia. In 1989, MSC acquired the cruise operator Lauro Lines, which was renamed MSC Cruises in 1995. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

[The "Stefan Batory" was an ocean liner built in Holland in 1952 under the name of SS "Maasdam", initially used to service the Dutch East Indies by the Holland America Line. She was bought from Holland in 1968 and began service as a Polish ocean liner in April 1969 as a replacement for the obsolete MS "Batory", both named after a king of Poland Stefan Batory (1533-1586). After she was refitted and renamed she became the flagship of the Polish Ocean Lines in the 1970s and 1980s and mainly sailed from Gdynia-Copenhagen-Rotterdam-London-Montreal-Southampton-Rotterdam-Copenhagen-Gdynia. She remained in service until 1988 and was the last regularly scheduled transatlantic liner. She was scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey in May 2000.]
