The Museo del Oro (Museum of Gold) is an archaeology museum established on 22 December 1939. The museum displays a selection of pre-Columbian gold and other metal alloys, such as Tumbaga, and contains the largest collection of gold artifacts in the world in its exhibition rooms. Together with pottery, stone, shell, wood and textile objects, these items, made of what indigenous cultures considered to be a sacred metal, testify to the life and thought of the different societies which lived in present-day Colombia before the Spanish conquest of the Americas. The museum is administered by the Banco de la República.

Postcard published by Verlag M. Schmidt, Bremen, Nº 75.
Circulated in Germany in March 1954.

The M.S. Beaverbrae ( 9,034 tons) was built as Huascaran by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg (Germany), in 1939, for the Hamburg-America Line. She made his maiden voyage from Hamburg and the West coast of South America. On return taken over by German Navy for conversion to a submarine depot ship. Spent most of WW2 in Norway where she was captured undamaged by the Allies in 1945. Allocated to Canada as war reparation; refit at Liverpool 1947. Purchased by Canadian Pacific and renamed Beaverbrae, she made her first sailing for them 8 February 1948 from St.John NB with cargo to London. She then sailed to Bremen to pick up passengers for Canada. Eventually she made 51 sailings from Bremen carrying 38,000 displaced persons to Canada as refugees whilst carrying cargo eastbound. Her last emigrant voyage to Canada departed on 28 July 1954. Sold to Compagnia Genovese d'Armamento, Genoa 1 November 1954, she was rebuilt at Monfalcone to 10,022 GRT with accommodation for 1,124 tourist class passengers. Renamed Aurelia, she sailed from Trieste on13 May 1955, via Suez to Australia and made later voyages from Genoa. Re-engined in 1958-59 and rebuilt to 10,480 tons, and she started Bremen-Suez-Australia service on 12 June 1959. In 1962 she began a round of 34 voyages between English Channel ports and New York. In 1970 she was sold to Chandris Lines, renamed Romanza and refitted for cruising. Resold to Ambassador Leisure in 1991; renamed Romantica and cruised in the eastern Mediterranean. M/S "BATORY", Poland. Stamp issued as a souvenir sheet by the Polish Post in 2023

M/S BATORY
Stamp issued as a souvenir sheet by the Polish Post on 17.07.2023.

M/S Batory was built in 1934–1935 at the Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico in Monfalcone, Italy, under an arrangement where part of the commission was paid in shipments of coal from Poland, and she was launched on 3 July 1935. She was a Polish ocean liner which was the flagship of Gdynia-America Line, named after Stefan Batory, the sixteenth-century King of Poland. She began regular service in May 1936 on the Gdynia — New York run, and by 1939 had carried over 3,000 passengers. Mobilized at the outbreak of World War II, she served as a troop ship and a hospital ship by the Allied Navy for the rest of the war. In 1940 she, along with Chrobry, transported allied troops during the Norwegian campaign. She was also one of the last ships to leave St Jean de Luz during the final evacuation of Polish troops from France. She was also used for secretly shipping many valuable Polish treasures to Canada for safekeeping. On 5 August 1940 she left Liverpool with convoy WS 2 (Winston's Specials) evacuating 477 children to Sydney, Australia, under the Children's Overseas Reception Board until the war was over. She sailed via Cape Town, India, Singapore to where she had carried 300 troops and Sydney. She was involved in the allied invasion of Oran, Algeria in 1942 (Operation Torch). That same year she took troops to India and later took part in the Allied invasion of Sicily and southern France (Operation Dragoon), where she was the flagship of General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny, Commander-in-Chief of the French Army. Returned to post-war Poland in 1946, she resumed civilian service after a refit, and after she was withdrawn from the North Atlantic route, refurbished at Hebburn for service in the tropics, and sailed in August 1951 from Gdynia and Southampton to Bombay and Karachi, via Gibraltar, Malta, Aden, and Suez. In 1957, she returned to the North Atlantic run. She continued in service until 1969, when she was decommissioned and became a floating hotel in Gdynia. However, after about a year, she was sold back to Polish Ocean Lines, and from there she was sold for scrap to Hong Kong. She left Gdynia on 31 March 1971 and arrived to the scrapyard on 26 May. The ship had been scrapped completely by 1972.

GÉRARDMER, Vosges, France. The electric tram to the Schlucht (1910s)

GÉRARDMER
The electric tram ascending to the Schlucht.

Postcard published by A. Largeron, Nº 77. (1910s)

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Schlucht pass (at 1,139 meters above sea level) served as the border between France and the German Empire. On 29 June 1904, an electric tram line was inaugurated from Gérardmer, and on 13 May 1907, on the German side, another tram line was put into service from the Alsatian city of Munster. At the top of Schlucht there were, therefore, two tram stations, and both passengers coming from France and those arriving from Germany had to get off and walk a few meters if they wanted to continue their journey towards the neighboring country: the journey between Gérardmer and Munster took two hours and a half. To change lines, passengers had to go through customs. Both services were interrupted during the First World War and resumed in the 1920s, until they were permanently suspended on 28 August 1939 and replaced by a bus line.

CUNARD LINE. The "Queen Mary" arrival at Long Beach (California), December 9, 1967

CUNARD LINE. The "Queen Mary" arrival at Long Beach (California), December 9, 1967. Postcard by Queen Mary Souvenir / The Continental Card, B2773.
[Launched on 26 September 1934. Sailed on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, on 27 May 1936, to New York. In late August 1939, was on a return run from New York to Southampton. The international situation led to her being escorted by the battlecruiser HMS "Hood". She arrived safely, and set out again for New York on 1 September. By the time she arrived, the Second World War had started and she was ordered to remain in port until further notice alongside "Normandie". In 1940 "Queen Mary" and "Normandie" were joined in New York by new running mate "Queen Elizabeth". The three largest liners in the world sat idle for some time until the Allied commanders decided that all three ships could be used as troopships. "Queen Mary" left New York for Sydney, where she, along with several other liners, was converted into a troopship to carry Australian and New Zealand soldiers to the United Kingdom. During the war, "Queen Mary" carried British Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic for meetings with fellow Allied forces officials on several occasions. After World War II, from September 1946 to July 1947, "Queen Mary" was refitted for passenger service, adding air conditioning and upgrading her berth configuration to 711 first class, 707 cabin class and 577 tourist class passengers. Following refit, "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth" dominated the transatlantic passenger trade as Cunard White Star's two ship weekly express service through the latter half of the 1940s and well into the 1950s. By 1965, the entire Cunard fleet was operating at a loss. Hoping to continue financing their still under construction "Queen Elizabeth 2", Cunard mortgaged the majority of the fleet. Finally, under a combination of age, lack of public interest, inefficiency in a new market, and the damaging after effects of the national seamen's strike, Cunard announced that both "Queen Mary" and "Queen Elizabeth" would be retired from service and were to be sold off. Many offers were submitted, but it was Long Beach, California who beat the Japanese scrap merchants. "Queen Mary" was retired from service in 1967. After her retirement in 1967, she steamed to Long Beach, California, where she is permanently moored as a tourist attraction, hotel, museum, and event facility.]

UNION-CASTLE LINE. Royal Mail Motor Vessel "Carnavon Castle"

UNION-CASTLE LINE [shipping line that operated a fleet of passenger liners and freighters between Europe and Africa from 1900 to 1977] to South and East Africa. Royal Mail Motor Vessel "Carnavon Castle". 20,141 tons. Publicitary postcard posted on board at Southampton (04.11.1955) to Watford (Hertfordshire, England), "Paquebot posted at sea".
[The "Carnavon Castle" was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast and launched on 14 January 1926. When war broke out she was converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser in Simonstown in September 1939. Her armament consisted of 8 x 6 inch guns,
2 x 3 inch anti-aircraft guns and 6 machines guns, and was manned by RN and RNVR personel under Capt. HWM Hardy. HMS "Carnarvon Castle" was stationed in the South Atlantic, partly to counter the threat from German commerce raiders that had been active in the area. On 5 December, roughly 700 miles from Montevideo she sighted an unidentified vessel which was later identified as the commerce raider "Thor". The raider did not answer Carnarvons challenges and the range was closed, with Carnarvon putting a shot across the raiders bows. The raider opened fire and brought her fire to bear on the undergunned Carnarvon. By 0930 the battle was over and the Thor disengaged and sailed off trailing smoke. In the action the Carnarvon had fired over 600 shells and sustained 38 hits and fires but she had survived only looking somewhat the worse for wear. She sailed for Montevideo where she put in for repairs (apparently some of the plating came from the Graf Spee) and then back to Cape Town for permanent repairs. She served mostly as an AMC during the war, being refitted briefly in the USA and fitted with radar. In 1944 she was fitted out as a troopship and spent the rest of the war on the trooping shuttle between America and the United Kingdom. After the war she was used as an immigrant carrier with 1283 berths and was modernised again in 1949-50, her tonnage rising to 20 141 tons. She was put back on the mail service until 1962 when she was withdrawn and finally sent to the breakers. One odd reference to the ships wartime service can be found at Portsmouth (Evergreen) Memorial Park in Virgina in the USA where one of her wartime crew, Able Seaman S.H. Becker of East London has found his rest. (Info from http://www.allatsea.co.za/unioncastle/carnarvon.htm).]
