Inaugurated on 4 October 1913, the 4.8 km tramway of Sóller is not only a tourist attraction, but also a means of public transport used for more than a century by the inhabitants of the small town to travel to its port and beaches and backwards. The tramway, besides transporting passengers, has also been used to transport boxes of fish from the docks to the market or oranges to the ships that sailed to the French ports in the past, to carry vegetables from the orchards to the town and even to carry coal and war materials to the naval base of the Navy located in the Port of Sóller.

LA MARÍTIMA SOLLERENSE (Sóller, Mallorca). Vapor "Villa de Sóller". Tarjeta postal de D.B. édit., Cette (Sète), circulada el 11.07.1909 de Saint-Alban-de-Roche (Isère, Francia) a Rivoli (Piamonte, Italia).
[La naviera Marítima Sollerense se constituyó en 1903, y el vapor "Villa de Sóller" (49,72 metros de eslora, 7,16 de manga y 4,13 de puntal), construido por Howaldswerke de Kiel (Alemania) bajo la vigilancia del Lloyd inglés, fue botado el 4 de septiembre del mismo año en Kiel y llegó a Palma de Mallorca el 7 de diciembre, y el día 11 a Sóller. El día 22 del mismo mes realizó el viaje inaugural a Barcelona y Cette (Sète, Francia), con pasajeros y carga general. Durante la primera guerra mundial lo adquirió la naviera catalana Hijos de José Tayá, por cuenta de la cual navegó hasta el 15 de mayo de 1918 en que fue torpedeado y hundido por un submarino alemán en las proximidades de Villefranche, en ruta de Génova a Barcelona.]
