VAPOR "TEIDE". Compañía Trasmediterránea, Spain. Advertising postcard

VAPOR TEIDE
Compañía Trasmediterránea
Spain

Postcard issued by the shipping company.

Built in 1895 at the A. G. Vulkan Werke shipyards in Stettin, Germany, under the name Crefeld, it was acquired by the Spanish government on 25 October 1918, and assigned to the Trasmediterránea Shipping Company by Royal Order of 16 February 1924. It served as a transatlantic mail ship, beginning its voyages in Barcelona and stopping at the ports of Málaga and Cádiz, among others, before completing its journey in Buenos Aires and Montevideo. On 20 October 1924, it was renamed Teide and underwent extensive refitting at the Nuevo Vulcano shipyard in Barcelona. Initially intended for traffic to the Canary Islands, in February 1931 it was incorporated into the Guinea route, which until then had been served by the Compañía Trasatlántica and which, from that date onward, was operated by the Compañía Trasmediterránea. On 15 May 1932, it set sail from Barcelona on what would be its final voyage. On 20 May, it left Cádiz by the stern, with 35 passengers and 110 crew members, bound for Santa Isabel on Fernando Poo. In Monrovia, 65 laborers boarded to work on board, and they were scheduled to disembark at the same port on the return journey. In San Carlos, 400 native passengers boarded for Bata, and it was during this crossing, at 3:00 a.m. on 8 June, that the Teide ran aground at Punta Oscura, southwest of Fernando Poo Island, in a place called Etepo by the natives, next to the Baña River and very close to Punta Sagre. Fortunately, there were no personal injuries, and both the passengers and crew were picked up by the British-flagged mixed vessel Appam and taken to Santa Isabel." RMS "Olympic" (collectable card)

RMS "Olympic" drawn by Edgar Pullin. Collectible card by Amalgamated Tobacco Corporation (South Africa) Ltd., Johannesburg, 'Famous British Ships', series Nº 1, 24.
[RMS "Olympic" was an ocean liner built by Harland and Wolff, in Belfast (North Ireland), for the White Star Line, which also included Titanic and Britannic. Unlike her sisters, Olympic served a long and illustrious career (1911 to 1935). For a short time she was the largest ocean liner in the world. Was launched 20 October 1910, her maiden voyage commenced on 14 June 1911. "Olympic"'s first major mishap occurred on 20 September 1911, when she collided with a British warship, HMS "Hawke" off the Isle of Wight. Although the incident resulted in the flooding of two of her compartments and a twisted propeller shaft, "Olympic" was able to return to Southampton under her own power. Afer other incidents, during the war "Olympic" is reported to have carried up to 201,000 troops and other personnel, burning 347,000 tons of coal and travelling about 184,000 miles. Her impressive World War I service earned her the nickname "Old Reliable". In August 1919 Olympic returned to Belfast for restoration to civilian service. At the turn of 1927-28, Olympic was converted to carry tourist third cabin passengers as well as first, second and third class. Tourist third cabin was an attempt to attract travellers who desired comfort without the accompanying high ticket price. New public rooms were constructed for this class, although tourist third cabin and second class would merge to become 'tourist' by late 1931. "Olympic" was withdrawn from service in 1935 and sold to be partially demolished at Jarrow, providing work for the region. In 1937, Olympic was towed to Inverkeithing to T.W. Ward's yard for final demolition.]

COMPAÑÍA TRANSMEDITERRÁNEA. Vapor "Teide" [1895-1932] (Línea Fernando Póo). Departamento de lujo

COMPAÑÍA TRANSMEDITERRÁNEA. Vapor "Teide" [1895-1932] (Línea Fernando Póo). Departamento de lujo. Tarjeta postal publicitaria.
