GUATRACHÉ (La Pampa), Argentina. Colonie "Neue Hoffnung". Calendar 2001

GUATRACHÉ
La Pampa

Der Deutsche Kaufladen von der Colonie "Neue Hoffnung"
[The German grocery store from the “New Hope” colony]

Calendar 2001.

In 1985, several Mennonite families from Paraguay, Bolivia and Mexico founded the Colonia Neue Hoffnung ('New Hope') in the vicinity of the rural Argentine town of Guatraché (La Pampa province). Its residents (about 1,500) dedicate themselves to the production of milk and cheese, raising horses and cattle, and making clothing and footwear, in addition to demonstrating their skill with wood. The neighborhood has also become an attraction for curious people and tourists, who are invited to learn about the culture and customs of the community and buy its products.

Mennonites are Anabaptist Christians: they believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, and do not believe in saints, virgins, insignia and images, and follow the teachings of the Dutch reformer Menno Simons (1496 - 1561), who distanced himself from Catholic dogmas. and promoted a return to biblical foundations, including austerity and sacrifice as essential values. The children of the colony have their own school, where the teacher teaches classes in Hochdeutsch (pure standard German); In daily life, however, they use Plautdietsch, a dialect where German is mixed with Dutch.

The photo is of the Copahue hot springs, located in the Argentine province of Neuquén.
