"KERGELEN". Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Réunis, France. Postcard

KERGELEN
Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Réunis

Postcard published by Labo-Photo-Sud-Est, Marseille, CO 30-23.

This vessel was built in 1920 as the Meduana for the Compagnie de Navigation Sud-Atlantique; in 1928, it passed to Chargeurs Réunis, which renamed it Kerguelen (in honor of the explorer Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen de Trémarec) and assigned it to routes serving South America. In August 1940, during World War II, it was requisitioned by the German Kriegsmarine for troop transport, and in 1941, it was transferred to the German shipping company Reederei F. Laeisz. Returned to Chargeurs Réunis in 1948, it was ultimately scrapped in 1955. It had a gross tonnage of 10,123 tons. As a mixed-service ocean liner intended for migration and trade routes to South America, its original design accommodated approximately 400 passengers, divided into different classes (first, second, and third class or steerage for immigrants).

SS "KÖNIG ALBERT", Germany. Photo

SS KÖNIG ALBERT
Germany

SS König Albert was a German ocean liner owned by the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line of Bremen. The ship was built by Stettiner Vulcan of Stettin, and launched in 1899. She sailed on her maiden voyage from Hamburg, via the Suez Canal to the Far East. She completed eight round voyages on this service and was then transferred on 3 March 1903 to the Bremen - Cherbourg - New York City route for a single voyage. On 16 April 1903 she went to the Genoa - Naples - New York City run and stayed mainly on this service until commencing her last voyage on 11 June 1914. Interned in Italy at the outbreak of World War I, she was seized by the Italian Government in 1915, renamed the Ferdinando Palasciano and converted to a hospital ship. On 20 January 1916 off the Albanian coast she was captured as a prize by the Austro-Hungarian Navy U-boat U-11, and escorted into their naval base of Cattaro. She was later handed back to the Italians. In 1920, the ship was chartered to Navigazione Generale Italiana of Genoa and on 15 June 1920 commenced her first voyage Genoa - Naples - New York. She completed six round trip voyages on this route, the last one commencing 13 April 1921. She was used also as a transport for the Royal Italian Navy, before being scrapped in 1926.

02.01.2025

The Palais Rohan in Strasbourg is the former residence of the prince-bishops and cardinals of the House of Rohan, an ancient French noble family originally from Brittany. It is a major architectural, historical, and cultural landmark in the city. It was built next to Strasbourg Cathedral in the 1730s, from designs by Robert de Cotte, and is considered a masterpiece of French Baroque architecture. Since its completion in 1742, the palace has hosted a number of French monarchs such as Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon and Joséphine, and Charles X. Since the end of the 19th century the palace has been home to three of Strasbourg's most important museums: the Archaeological Museum (Musée archéologique), the Museum of Decorative Arts (Musée des arts décoratifsr) and the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts). The municipal art gallery, Galerie Robert Heitz, in a lateral wing of the palace, is used for temporary exhibitions. The Palais Rohan has been listed since 1920 as a Monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.

LONDON (England). Imperial War Museum, HMS "Belfast" (2011)

LONDON (England). Imperial War Museum, HMS "Belfast". Ticket Nº 100650420, 2 persons, Group A, 24.07.2011.
[Imperial War Museum is a British national museum organisation with branches at five locations in England, three of which are in London. The museum was founded during the First World War in 1917 and intended as a record of the war effort and sacrifice of Britain and her Empire. Originally housed in the Crystal Palace at Sydenham Hill, the museum opened to the public in 1920. In 1924 the museum moved to space in the Imperial Institute in South Kensington, and finally in 1936 the museum acquired a permanent home which was previously the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Southwark.
Construction of the Royal Navy cruiser HMS "Belfast", one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, "Belfast" was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939 "Belfast" struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Returning to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour, "Belfast" was the largest and arguably most powerful cruiser in the Royal Navy at the time. "Belfast" saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944 Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945 "Belfast" was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. "Belfast" saw further combat action in 1950-52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963. In 1978 the "Belfast" became a branch of the Imperial War Museum, having previously been preserved for the nation by a private trust.]

S.S. "TUNISIAN", Allan Line (UK), built in 1900. Vintage postcard

S.S. "TUNISIAN", Allan Line (UK). Vintage Tuck's "Oilette" postcard, 9213.
[Launched in 1900, the Allan Line's "Tunisian" was built by Alex Stephen & Son of Glasgow. She took her maiden voyage on 5 April 1900, from Liverpool to Halifax and Portland, Maine. A month later, she made her first trip to Québec and Montréal. During World War I, "Tunisian" served first as a prisoner of war accommodation ship at Ryde, Isle of Wight, and then as a troop carrier. In 1917 she passed into Canadian Pacific ownership with the Allan Line itself, and returned to commercial service, serving Canada from Liverpool, London and Glasgow over the next three years. In 1920, "Tunisian" was converted to a cabin/third class configuration. Renamed "Marburn" in 1922, she remained in service until 1927, sailing from Liverpool, Glasgow, Hamburg, Antwerp and London at various times. She made her final transatlantic sailing, from Antwerp to St. John, New Brunswick, in April 1928, and went to the breakers that fall.]

[The Molli (German: Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn "Molli"; short: MBB) is a narrow-gauge steam-powered railway in Mecklenburg, running on 900 mm gauge track. It operates between Bad Doberan, Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn West over a total distance of 15.4 km with a running time of 40 minutes. Within Bad Doberan the line runs through the street, and later along a linden tree-lined avenue. Between Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn the tracks run parallel to the Baltic Sea beach across fields. The line between Bad Doberan and the seaside resort of Heiligendamm was opened on 9 July 1886, built and operated by the railway enterprise Lenz & Co. in Stettin (today Szczecin, Poland). On 1 March 1890 the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin took over the line and integrated it into the Grand-Ducal Mecklenburgian Friedrich Franz railway. The extension of the line to the Baltic Sea resort of Kühlingsborn, which was still called Arendsee at that time, took place on 12 May 1910. Starting from 1920 the line was operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German Imperial Railway). In 1995 an operator company, consisting of the district of Bad Doberan as well as the towns of Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan, took over the enterprise. Today the consortium calls itself the Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn Molli GmbH & Co. KG in Bad Doberan. The railway terminal at Kühlingsborn West houses the Molli-Museum. This railway company is not to be confused with the Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn AG, which opened the Rövershagen Kleinbf - Graal-Müritz line on 1 July 1925, running it until 1949 when the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn took over the enterprise.]
