Following the destruction of the previous building by fire in January 1855, the current one was built according to a design by Joseph Poelaert and inaugurated on 28 March 1856, with Fromental Halévy's Jaguarita l'Indienne. The theater was renovated in the 1950s, 1985, and 1999.
