The Collegiate Church of Belmonte was built on the site of the old Visigothic parish church from the 5th century. This is attested by a human tomb and a flat stone at its head, and other remains and old walls, which appeared in restoration works from 1976. The current building was built at the initiative of Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena (1419-1474). Pope Pius II erected the parish of Belmonte as a Collegiate Church in the year 1459. Subsequently, the noble families of Belmonte added chapels to the side naves, providing them with altars, bars, images, paintings, ornaments, goldsmithing, etc. The temple was declared a historical-artistic monument on July 27, 1943, and in 1981 a museum of sacred art was inaugurated inside. It is currently listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest, with the category of monument.
