The Richard-de-Bas paper mill in Ambert is one of the oldest French businesses. The mill has been partially classified as a Historic Monument since 1983, and the company "Moulins à papier du Val de Lagat" has held the "Living Heritage Company" ('Entreprise du patrimoine vivant') label since 2020. The mill is believed to date back to 1326. It takes its name from the Richard family—papermakers active in the 15th century—with "Bas" serving to distinguish it geographically from the six buildings arranged along the millrace. Animal hides were tanned there from 1400 to 1850, after which rags began to be used to produce paper pulp.
