The Guindais Funicular, in Porto, connects the Praça da Batalha, situated uphill to the north, with Cais dos Guindais, by the riverside to the south. The upper station is by the terminus of the vintage tram line 22 and within walking distance of São Bento station for metro and railway connections. The lower station is by the lower level of the Dom Luís I Bridge and within walking distance of the Praça da Ribeira. The original line was established in July 1887. Authorization for construction was granted on 17 February 1891, and the funicular commenced operations on 4 June of the same year. However, on 5 June 1893, a serious accident occurred. Though the company intended to reopen the funicular after the accident, the adverse conditions following the financial crisis of 1891 prevented this. In 2004, the Guindais Funicular was remodeled. It opened on 19 February.
