A Karzer was a place of detention designated for the incarceration of students as punishment, within the jurisdiction of some educational institutions in Germany and German-speaking universities abroad. The American writer Mark Twain wrote about the karzer in Heidelberg in his book "A Tramp Abroad" (1880).
