The Hotel Tamanaco Intercontinental, with 400 rooms, was designed by the American architect John Wellborn Root Jr. It was inaugurated in 1953. Tamanaco is the name of an indigenous chief and warrior of the Mariches and Quiriquires tribes during the 16th century, one of the historical figures of indigenous resistance against the Spanish conquest of Venezuelan territory.
