Aspendos or Aspendus (Attic: Ἄσπενδος) was an ancient Greco-Roman city in the region of Pamphylia. In 546 BC, it came under Persian rule, in 333 BC it was reconquered by Alexander the Great, and in 190 BC it surrendered to the Romans. Towards the end of the Roman period the city began a decline that continued throughout the Byzantine era. Aspendos is known for having the best-preserved theatre of antiquity, the Roman Theatre, built in AD 155 by the Greek architect Zeno; with a diameter of 96 metres (315 ft), it offered seating for 7,000.
