The Basilica Cistern (Byzantine Greek: βασιλική κινστέρνή; Latin: Cisterna Basilica) is an enclosed water cistern built in Istanbul in 526–527 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian (527–565) to supply the city's water needs. It was connected to Hadrian's Canals, which supplied the water needs of the first and second hills of the city. After the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottomans, it served as a water distribution centre around Sarayburnu and Bahçe Kapısı. Its dimensions were first taken by the German archaeologist Eckhard Unger during the First World War and it was stated that it measured 138 x 64.6 metres; its height is 9 metres.
