Cristina station was built in 1902 and named in honor of María Cristina de Borbón, regent of Spain. It functioned as Havana's main passenger railway station until 1912, when it was replaced by the new Central Railway Station. The building was restored in the 1980s and was used as a terminal station for urban and suburban trains. After it was closed, the Cuban Railway Museum was installed there, inaugurated on 19 November 2002; At the same time, the building was declared a National Monument.
