Bulguksa (불국사, meaning "Buddha Land Temple") is a Buddhist temple in Gyeongju, the former capital of the Silla Kingdom. It houses seven national treasures of Korea, including the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas, the Cheongun-gyo (Blue Cloud Bridge), and two gold-plated bronze Buddha statues. The temple is considered a masterpiece of the heyday of Buddhism in the Silla Kingdom. Bulguska Temple, next to Seokguram Grotto, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. The present temple was built under King Gyeongdeok between 751 and 774, and was renovated in the 10th century. During the Imjin Wars (1592–1598, when Korea was invaded by Japan) the wooden buildings were burned. After 1604, reconstruction began and Bulguksa was enlarged, and about forty renovations were carried out between then and 1805. In 1966, after the Korean War (1950-1953), the temple was restored again, and between 1969 and 1973 it underwent further restoration, which brought Bulguksa to its present form.
