S/S "ARIADNE", Finland. Postcard

S/S ARIDNE

Postcard published by Postimuseo, Tampere, Nº 79 (1997). Reprint of a old postcard.

The S/S Ariadne was a passenger steamship owned by Suomen Vöyrylaiva Osakeyhtiö, which operated from 1914 to 1968. She was designed by shipbuilding engineer Hugo Lindfors and built at the Lindholmens Verkstads Ab shipyard in Gothenburg, Sweden. She had 128 class I, 58 class II and 54 class III cabin seats, and in addition there were 260 seats on deck, so a total of five hundred passengers could be embarked. The Ariadne began operating on the Helsinki - Tallinn - Stettin line on May 2, 1914. On August 4 of the same year, after the start of World War I, the Russian government seized the ship and moored it as a hospital ship in the port of Helsinki, where it remained until 1918, when the Russians left Finland. Starting in the spring of 1919, the Ariadne operated the Helsinki - Hanko - Stockholm route in the summer season and the Helsinki - Copenhagen - Hull route in the winter season before the ice arrived. In 1921 she resumed the Helsinki - Tallinn - Stettin line. She had the official status of a postal ship. After the outbreak of the Winter War, the Ariadne was stationed first at Uusikaupunki and later at the Swedish cities of Holmsund and Stockholm. In 1942-1943 the ship was leased to the German Navy and as a hospital ship she transported wounded soldiers to Germany. At the end of the Continuation War, in September 1944 she again became a hospital ship for Finnish soldiers. From June 1949 to 1967 the ship operated the Helsinki-Copenhagen route, and then the Helsinki-Tallinn and Turku-Stockholm routes. She was taken out of service in September 1968 and in July 1969 she was sold for scrapping.

RESTAURANT BEIM HOFMEISTER, Wien (Österreich / Austria)

RESTAURANT BEIM HOFMEISTER
Bräunerstrasse 7
1010 Wien (Österreich / Austria)
www.restaurant-hofmeister.at

[In the place of actual restaurant the imperial riding stables of Empress Maria Theresria had been situated till 1687. The portal, adorned by an escutcheon, was erected in 1684 and has been well preserved to this day. Indeed gastronomy was established since 1723 under these vaults. The whote building was called “Freihaus Walterskirchen”. In 1878 Katharina Breyer founded here the so called “Protiviner Bierhalle”, named after the small Bohemian town Protivin, where a famous brewery was situated. As of 1902 the new owner decided to sell only the famous Eudweiser beer. In 1919 the grandparents Hofmeister took over the restaurant and called it “Zum alten Burgkeller”. In the postwar era the restaurant changed its name into “Bukarest” and after 1998 once more into “Beim Hofmeister” named after our surname, in honour and gratitude of our grandparents.]

KUMU, Eesti kunstimuseum. Tallinn (Eesti / Estonia)

KUMU
Eesti kunstimuuseum / Estonian Art Museum
Weizenbergi 34 / Valge 1
Tallinn (Eesti / Estonia)
www.kumu.ee

[Art Museum of Estonia was founded on November 17th, 1919, but it was not until 1921 that it got its first permanent building – the Kadriorg Palace, built in the 18th century. In 1929 the palace was expropriated from the Art Museum in order to rebuild it as the residence of the President of Estonia. The Art Museum of Estonia was housed in several different temporary spaces, until it moved back to the palace in 1946. In September, 1991 the Kadriorg Palace was closed, because it had totally deteriorated by then. At the end of the year the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia decided to guarantee the construction of a new building for the Art Museum of Estonia in Kadriorg. Until then the Knighthood House at Toompea Hill served as the temporary main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. The exhibition there was opened on April 1, 1993. Art Museum of Estonia premanently closed down the exhibitions in that building in October 2005.
At the end of the 1970s, in the 1980s the first branches of the Art Museum of Estonia were founded. Starting from the 1995 all the branches offer different educational programmes for children and young people.  In 1996 the exhibition hall on the first floor of Rotermann Salt Storage was opened, this branch was closed in May 2005. In summer 2000 the restored Kadriorg Palace was opened, but not as the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia, but as a branch. Kadriorg Art Museum now exhibits the foreign art collection of the Art Museum of Estonia.
At present there are five active branches of the Art Museum of Estonia: Kadriorg Art Museum (Kadriorg Palace and Mikkel Museum), Niguliste Museum, Adamson-Eric Museum, and Kumu Art Museum (the new main building of the Art Museum of Estonia, opened on 14 February 2006)

RMS "Olympic" (collectable card)

RMS "Olympic" drawn by Edgar Pullin. Collectible card by Amalgamated Tobacco Corporation (South Africa) Ltd., Johannesburg, 'Famous British Ships', series Nº 1, 24.
[RMS "Olympic" was an ocean liner built by Harland and Wolff, in Belfast (North Ireland), for the White Star Line, which also included Titanic and Britannic. Unlike her sisters, Olympic served a long and illustrious career (1911 to 1935). For a short time she was the largest ocean liner in the world. Was launched 20 October 1910, her maiden voyage commenced on 14 June 1911. "Olympic"'s first major mishap occurred on 20 September 1911, when she collided with a British warship, HMS "Hawke" off the Isle of Wight. Although the incident resulted in the flooding of two of her compartments and a twisted propeller shaft, "Olympic" was able to return to Southampton under her own power. Afer other incidents, during the war "Olympic" is reported to have carried up to 201,000 troops and other personnel, burning 347,000 tons of coal and travelling about 184,000 miles. Her impressive World War I service earned her the nickname "Old Reliable". In August 1919 Olympic returned to Belfast for restoration to civilian service. At the turn of 1927-28, Olympic was converted to carry tourist third cabin passengers as well as first, second and third class. Tourist third cabin was an attempt to attract travellers who desired comfort without the accompanying high ticket price. New public rooms were constructed for this class, although tourist third cabin and second class would merge to become 'tourist' by late 1931. "Olympic" was withdrawn from service in 1935 and sold to be partially demolished at Jarrow, providing work for the region. In 1937, Olympic was towed to Inverkeithing to T.W. Ward's yard for final demolition.]

OLDHAM CORPORATION (England). Roe bodied Leyland PDi bus of 1947. Illustration: G. S. Cooper. Postcard by M.A. Arts, MB64/100.
[The first tram line of the Oldham Corporation Transport was open on the 15th December 1900. At this time, Oldham was still being served by the horse trams of the Manchester Carriage and Tramways Company. Motorbuses had made an appearance in Oldham during May 1913. A further service was introduced on the 31st August 1914 to Denshaw from the new tram terminus at Grains Bar. However, the cost of operating the buses was becoming too expensive and the services were withdrawn in 1919. The 1968 Road Transport Act provided for the creation of the South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire (SELNEC) Passenger Transport Executive, of which Oldham became a part on the 1st November 1969, officially ceasing to exist as a separate municipal undertaking at midnight on the 31st October.]

CAEN (France). Tramway en 1920. L'une des voitures construites par Preston. Photo: GEC Traction Ltd.
