OPERNHAUS, Hannover, Germany. Postcard (1980s)

OPERNHAUS
Hannover

Postcard published by Verlag Schöning + Gebrüder Schmidt, Lübeck, Nº Hann 1144 (1980s).

The Hanover Opera House (Opernhaus or Niedersächsische Staatsoper) was built between 1845 and 1852 in the late Classical style. The architect was Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, and the foreman was Christian Heinrich Tramm, who later became the court architect. It opened on September 5, 1852, with Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. The Opera House replaced the Leineschloss Palace Theatre, where operas had been performed since 1689. The Opera House served as the Royal Theatre until 1918, when it became a Prussian State Theatre. In 1921, it was converted into a local performance venue. During the bombing of Hanover in World War II, specifically on 26 July 1943, it was hit by incendiary bombs, which left only the exterior walls intact. After the reconstruction in the historical style by the architect Werner Kallmorgen, the Opera House was reopened with Richard Strauss's The Knight of the Rose on 30 November 1950.

The McCord Museum, formerly known as the McCord Museum of Canadian History, is a public research and teaching museum dedicated to the study of social history and the history of Montreal. The Museum’s Archives, Documentary Art, Dress, Fashion and Textiles, Indigenous Cultures, Material Culture and Photography collections, containing 2.5 million images, objects, documents and works of art, position it as the custodian of a remarkable historical heritage. It is located directly across the street from McGill University, in the downtown core of Montreal. On 13 October 1921, the McCord National Museum, as it was then called, moved to the former McGill Union building, designed by Percy Erskine Nobbs in the Arts and Crafts tradition.[The collection was based on the McCord family collection. Since 1878, David Ross McCord had been adding to the already considerable collection assembled by his family since their arrival in Canada. Over the years, he developed the plan of founding a national history museum in Montreal, at that time Canada's metropolis. Starting 31 August 2022, the museum was renamed the McCord Stewart Museum. This followed the permanent closure of the Stewart Museum in February 2021 and the integration of its collection into that of the McCord Museum. The Stewart collection consisted of approximately 27,000 artefacts related to the European presence in New France and North America.

SS "KÖNIG ALBERT", Germany. Photo

SS KÖNIG ALBERT
Germany

SS König Albert was a German ocean liner owned by the Norddeutscher Lloyd Line of Bremen. The ship was built by Stettiner Vulcan of Stettin, and launched in 1899. She sailed on her maiden voyage from Hamburg, via the Suez Canal to the Far East. She completed eight round voyages on this service and was then transferred on 3 March 1903 to the Bremen - Cherbourg - New York City route for a single voyage. On 16 April 1903 she went to the Genoa - Naples - New York City run and stayed mainly on this service until commencing her last voyage on 11 June 1914. Interned in Italy at the outbreak of World War I, she was seized by the Italian Government in 1915, renamed the Ferdinando Palasciano and converted to a hospital ship. On 20 January 1916 off the Albanian coast she was captured as a prize by the Austro-Hungarian Navy U-boat U-11, and escorted into their naval base of Cattaro. She was later handed back to the Italians. In 1920, the ship was chartered to Navigazione Generale Italiana of Genoa and on 15 June 1920 commenced her first voyage Genoa - Naples - New York. She completed six round trip voyages on this route, the last one commencing 13 April 1921. She was used also as a transport for the Royal Italian Navy, before being scrapped in 1926.

S/S "ARIADNE", Finland. Postcard

S/S ARIDNE

Postcard published by Postimuseo, Tampere, Nº 79 (1997). Reprint of a old postcard.

The S/S Ariadne was a passenger steamship owned by Suomen Vöyrylaiva Osakeyhtiö, which operated from 1914 to 1968. She was designed by shipbuilding engineer Hugo Lindfors and built at the Lindholmens Verkstads Ab shipyard in Gothenburg, Sweden. She had 128 class I, 58 class II and 54 class III cabin seats, and in addition there were 260 seats on deck, so a total of five hundred passengers could be embarked. The Ariadne began operating on the Helsinki - Tallinn - Stettin line on May 2, 1914. On August 4 of the same year, after the start of World War I, the Russian government seized the ship and moored it as a hospital ship in the port of Helsinki, where it remained until 1918, when the Russians left Finland. Starting in the spring of 1919, the Ariadne operated the Helsinki - Hanko - Stockholm route in the summer season and the Helsinki - Copenhagen - Hull route in the winter season before the ice arrived. In 1921 she resumed the Helsinki - Tallinn - Stettin line. She had the official status of a postal ship. After the outbreak of the Winter War, the Ariadne was stationed first at Uusikaupunki and later at the Swedish cities of Holmsund and Stockholm. In 1942-1943 the ship was leased to the German Navy and as a hospital ship she transported wounded soldiers to Germany. At the end of the Continuation War, in September 1944 she again became a hospital ship for Finnish soldiers. From June 1949 to 1967 the ship operated the Helsinki-Copenhagen route, and then the Helsinki-Tallinn and Turku-Stockholm routes. She was taken out of service in September 1968 and in July 1969 she was sold for scrapping.
