The Nazaré Funicular (Portuguese: Ascensor da Nazaré) was inaugurated on 28 July 1889 to access the sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré. The line is 318 meters (1,043 ft) long and has a gradient of 42%. Initially, the funicular was moved by a steam engine that was heated with firewood. In September 2001 the funicular was closed for repair and modernization with new carriages, and reopened on June 24, 2002.
