The ship Ciudad de Cádiz was built in Renfrew (Scotland) in 1878 by order of Antonio López & Co (the Compañía Trasatlántica had not yet been created). It had a capacity for 417 passengers. Its length was 110.8 metres, and its width, 11.6 metres. It was destined for the lines to the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and later to the line to Spanish Guinea (now Equatorial Guinea), where it met its end: it sank on 10 October 1924 when sailing between San Carlos and Santa Isabel, today Luba and Malabo. During the war of 1898 between Spain and the United States it was armed as an auxiliary cruiser and integrated into the squadron destined for Cuba.
