Els Quatre Gats ("the four cats" in Catalan) was a brewery-cabaret and restaurant opened in Barcelona on June 12, 1897 on the ground floor of Casa Martí, a modernist building conceived by the famous architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The idea for this place came from the cultural promoter Pere Romeu. The place was immediately adopted by a group of artists: Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas (author of the painting reproduced on the card), Miquel Utrillo, Juli González, etc.; the musicians Enric Granados, Isaac Albéniz and Lluís Millet, among others. Picasso also frequented it during his time in Barcelona. In addition, during the year 1899, 15 issues of the Quatre Gats magazine were published, and it also served as an exhibition hall and theater space. It remained active until 1903, and at the end of the 20th century it was recovered, preserving the original decoration, and converted into a bar and restaurant.
