Telebrás
(Telecomunicações Brasileiras S.A.) was Brazil's state telephone monopoly made
up of 27 regional operators and one long distance operator. It was created in
1972 during the regime instituted by the 1964
coup d'état. Its purpose was to centralize the telecommunications companies
that were concessionaires of public services. It was privatized on July 29,
1998 when the Lei Mínima and Lei Geral de Telecomunicações were promulgated for
the reduction of the Brazilian public sector.
