Vessel "TRANSILVANIA". Postage stamp of Romania, issued in 1974

Vessel TRANSILVANIA

Postage stamp issued by Romanian post on 28.01.1974.

The Transilvania was built in the shipyards Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen in 1938 and was baptized in the port of Constanța on 8 September of the same year. Until the beginning of the II World War, it made regular trips as a cruise ship on the line Constanța - Alexandría - Haifa - Beirut - Piraeus - Istanbul - Constanța, with a capacity of 396 passengers (tourists, mostly foreigners) and a crew of 156 persons. During the war he took refuge in the port of Istanbul, because Turkey was a neutral country, which saved him from being used by Germany to transport troops and weapons, and only in 1944 he returned to Constanța, and for a while he dedicated himself to transports of prisoners from Russia and emigrants to Israel. Then it was sent to the fluvial port of Galaţi, where it sank on 9 September 1979. The remains were not recovered until 2008. The technical data of Transilvania were as follows: 132.44 meters in length, 17.44 meters in maximum width, 5.75 meters of draft and 6,672.31 tons of gross tonnage.

LONDON (England). Imperial War Museum, HMS "Belfast" (2011)

LONDON (England). Imperial War Museum, HMS "Belfast". Ticket Nº 100650420, 2 persons, Group A, 24.07.2011.
[Imperial War Museum is a British national museum organisation with branches at five locations in England, three of which are in London. The museum was founded during the First World War in 1917 and intended as a record of the war effort and sacrifice of Britain and her Empire. Originally housed in the Crystal Palace at Sydenham Hill, the museum opened to the public in 1920. In 1924 the museum moved to space in the Imperial Institute in South Kensington, and finally in 1936 the museum acquired a permanent home which was previously the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Southwark.
Construction of the Royal Navy cruiser HMS "Belfast", one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, "Belfast" was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939 "Belfast" struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Returning to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour, "Belfast" was the largest and arguably most powerful cruiser in the Royal Navy at the time. "Belfast" saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944 Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945 "Belfast" was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. "Belfast" saw further combat action in 1950-52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963. In 1978 the "Belfast" became a branch of the Imperial War Museum, having previously been preserved for the nation by a private trust.]

BRITISH RAILWAYS. The "Golden Arrow" [1938]

BRITISH RAILWAYS. The "Golden Arrow". Photo courtesy Southern Railway. Image by Senior Service Cigarettes, A series of 48, No. 45. [1938]
[The "Golden Arrow" (French: "Flèche d’Or") was a luxury boat train of the Southern Railway and later British Railways. It linked London with Dover, where passengers took the ferry to Calais to join the Flèche d’Or of the Chemin de Fer du Nord and later SNCF which took them on to Paris. It was introduced in 1926 as an all-first-class Pullman service between Paris and Calais. On 15 May 1929, the Southern Railway introduced the equivalent between London and Dover. In 1961, with the Kent Coast electrification scheme, the train became electric-hauled. This allowed an acceleration to 80 minutes for the down service and 82 minutes for the up service. A decline in demand for rail travel between London and Paris saw the last "Golden Arrow" run on 30 September 1972, and in its later years only the first class section was advertised as a Pullman service.]
